[His voice is much softer than usual. The brief quiet sound of rustling sheets and creaking springs can be heard as he shifts slightly in his hospital bed, letting out a barely audible grunt of pain.]

Hey, Maka. I didn't worry you too much, did I?

[She lifts her head up; suddenly a bright smile appears on her face--her eyes almost looks as if there were stars in them.]

Really?! You think so, Papa?!

W-well, sure, why not? They've brought a lot of people from back home already, right?

[His hand twitches slightly as he contemplates the idea, and he mutters almost to himself:]

Course I'd probably have to move out to the forest or something so she wouldn't risk running into me.

Well, I've spoken with Jackie who's in a further time than I am.

[Suddenly grinning really big.]

And she told me that Soul and I were able to collect all ninety-nine souls and we already had a witch soul due to defeating Arachne. That means in the future, Soul is a Death Scythe!

[His smile falters for just a second -- jeez, that damn spiky-haired kid really is going to replace him, isn't he? -- but he's proud of his daughter, and that, he has to remind himself, is what matters.]

I'm so glad that I was able to make Soul's dream come true. He was...so happy when I told him.

[He takes note of that, but tries to push it to the back of his mind -- imagining his little girl even possibly having a love life is the last thing he needs if he wants a speedy recovery.

Instead, he reaches to place his warm hand over hers.]

I'm glad. You both worked hard for it.

--Oh, is there anything that you need? Are you hungry at all? I can..uh,..try and search for some food. It's dark now because of the ash. So, it'll be difficult.

[He turns his head slightly to look out the window, taking in that now familiar darkness.]

That's what it is, huh? It'd been dark out every time I woke up, I was wondering how long I'd been out.

[Turning back after a pause, he smiles once more.]

Nah, I'm all right. Thank you.

[She starts blushing, back to fiddling with her fingers--looking elsewhere.]

[He hesitates for a moment--]

[--But he quickly gives up that line of thought entirely with a light sigh.]

But it really means a lot, you know? You staying here. Just don't let me keep you from anything else you could be doing, okay?

[He takes her hand once more to give it a gentle squeeze.]

[She nods and lightly gives his hand a squeeze in return. Maka smiles a little if not a bit sheepishly before leaning forward; resting her head on his shoulder again.]
